I continue with my focus on men this season and this week I’ll go through key accessories to prep up your outfit and keep you warm this season as well as guide you through purchasing a winter coat. Accessories are no longer viewed as a nice to have but are must haves that when put together correctly will make you look sharp.

Below is a list of accessories you can go for and basics to always have ready this season.

1. Hats

Invest in a stylish winter hat to keep your head warm and protect your hair from the cold weather. Go for knit caps and beanies to achieve a stylish casual look and always remember to avoid tassels and pomp oms – these are not a good look for guys. For formal looks stick to homburgs or fedoras and you’ll look dashing.

2. Scarfs

These can be found in wool or fleece and create a dashing look when worn correctly in casual or formal looks. Scarfs allow you to add a pop of color to regular colored items. With the interesting styles available this season, scarfs can also be used to cover one’s head and ears. For formal wear, go for simple wool scarfs that are not too chunky.

3. Gloves

We’d highly recommend leather gloves for men as they protect the hands from weather elements and look very classy. The basic rule with leather gloves though is to ensure they match with the other leather items you are wearing be it belt or shoes. For casual looks you can rock wool or fleece gloves which you can easily add on in funky colors to make your outfit pop.

How to choose a winter coat

It’s essential to choose a winter coat that works with your body build and is versatile enough to suite different occasions. Selecting which coat to buy is determined by what the coat is required for, whether formal or casual. Most guys just go for whatever is on the rack without paying attention to some key aspects we’ve highlighted below.

1. Climate- Select a coat based on the climate or environment you will wear the coat. It’s pointless to invest in a heavily lined snow coat in warm weather climates such as we experience in this country.

2. Occasion – Is your coat for casual or formal looks? Always ensure you select a coat according to the occasion you will most wear it for.

3. Color – It’s always advised to go for neutral colors which are more versatile and flexible to put on with various clothing outfits such as grey, black, khakhi and navy.

4. Style – always go for a classic style that will not go out of fashion. This will allow you to get full value out of your coat.

Winter Coat Styles

We’ll go through some key styles for men’s winter coats to assist in your selection when investing in one this season.

1. The Over Coat

The classic overcoat keeps you warm while giving you an air of professionalism. This coat is a must-have for a formal look and allows you to look respectable in the office.

2. The Trench Coat

The trench is versatile and can be worn over both casual and formal looks. The coats come in different styles which gives you options. The good thing about the trench is it can be worn in rainy weather as well hence it’s a versatile piece.

3. The Parka

These are usually worn with casual looks and come with fur lined hoodies for extremely cold days.

If you are confident on pushing stylish edge you can wear your parka with a suit.

4. The Duffle Coat

Easily recognized by wooden toggles instead of buttons. This coat is made of coarse wool and best worn to complete a casual look. You can find a hooded variation for these coats which are a great option to cover your head.

There you have it - easy trend tips to get you looking dapper this season.

I am definitely heading out for more coffee dates this winter just to enjoy the stylish looks the gents will be rocking this winter!
